Among the historical curiosities of the product, used for more than 100 years, is its naive but ingenious construction, which remains modern and innovative to this day.
1856 - Two Englishmen obtained a patent for the first known use of corrugated board as internal protection in domestic hats. That year also gave birth to the first "corrugator", very simple, with two corrugated rolls manually operated.
1871 - The corrugated board was first used as packaging when the American Albert L. Jones obtained a patent to cover fragile products, such as bottles, with packaging produced with this material.
1881- The motorized single facer was created. It was first introduced in England in 1883, in Germany in 1886 and in France in 1888.
1895 - The first known corrugator was designed by T. Jefferson Ferres, of the company Sefton Manufacturing Co.
1903 - A cereal producer first used a box of corrugated board single wall (liner layer / medium corrugated (flute) / liner layer), obtaining official approval for this sort of transport packaging.
1952 - The FEFCO - European Federation of Corrugated Board Manufacturers, was constituted.
In Brazil
1935 - The first corrugated board factory was formed by Mr. Joćo Costa e Ribeiro, who introduced the board single wall in the local market. Up to that year, the corrugated board single wall was imported from Germany. Production of corrugated board packaging recorded a rapid growth, following the Industrial Revolution and the demand for more transportation packaging.
1974 - The ABPO - Brazilian Association of Corrugated Board was founded.
In its first Statistical Yearbook ABPO pointed out that the production of corrugated board in Brazil had grown from 220 thousand tons in 1970 to 500 thousand tons in 1974.
1987 - Quality Control Manual is released. The manual has served users and manufactures of packaging and corrugated board products.
1999 - Glossary on Corrugated Board is released. The glossary has been of great value as a consultation instrument for the industry professionals, as well as users of corrugated board packaging.
2002 - Environment Brochure Folder is launched. The brochure informs the general community about the contribution of corrugated board packaging for the protection of the environment.
2003 - Corrugated Board Primer is released. The primer contains basic information on the corrugated board production and highlights necessary cautions regarding its operation.
Since the end of the nineteenth century, many changes have occurred, and remarkable progress has been accomplished towards the improvement of raw material, equipment, production processes and printing techniques of corrugated board packaging.
It's worth mentioning some examples of progress such as: the fact that the weight of paper used to produce corrugated board has increased continuously. For that reason, countless combinations of different papers are possible nowadays; and the industry production and productivity has grown in a fast pace. The same has occurred with the production lines of corrugated board. Computers have revolutionized the industry, allowing continuous production and expediting the work of the department of packaging development and order processing.
Such advances, naturally, have not come to an end, because the Age of Technology Information is just beginning. In the last decade, new printing techniques allowed for major changes. For example, the bar codes for product identification caused significant improvement in the board printing process. The so-called "micro-micro" flutes and high quality papers have enabled even more sophisticated printing. Such improvement enabled the use of corrugated board as primary packaging.
2007
- Manual to the Vegetable and Fruit Industry is released. The manual provides instructions to packaging users on how to preserve the quality of the products until they reach the end user. |
